On the foundations of an old church from the Ottoman period, also dedicated to St. Nicholas, the new Cathedral Church was built based on plans from Vienna.
The three-nave church is in Baroque style and has two large bell towers with a smaller one in the middle. German masters were in charge of the numerous stained-glass windows, while the large iconostasis was painted by Teodor Kračun and Jakov Orfelin. At the end of the 19th century, the famous Serbian painter Paja Jovanović authored nine oil paintings with scenes from the Old and New Testaments, as well as famous events from medieval Serbian history.
