The "Four Lions" Fountain is one of the most picturesque and recognisable places in Sremski Karlovci, erected in 1799 in honour of the completion of the first town waterworks and renovated several times until 2008.
The fountain is the work of Italian architect Giuseppe Aprili and local masters, which is why it carries overtones of different styles. It is set on three marble steps and features a red marble basin. The marble used for the fountain originates from Pécs, known as "vörös márvány", which gives it a warm red hue, while water flows continuously from metal lion heads through copper taps.
"Four Lions" is not just an architectural gem – there is a belief that anyone who drinks water from it will one day return to Sremski Karlovci and get married there.
