Metropolitan Stevan Stratimirović and merchant Dimitrije Anastasijević Sabor initiated and financed the construction of the first Serbian gymnasium, then the "Illyrian" Gymnasium. In November 1791, it was opened for students and was divided into six grades - four lower ("grammar") and two higher ("humanities"). Sixty years later, the sixth and seventh grades ("philosophy") were introduced. Subjects taught included: German, history, geography, natural sciences, anthropology, Roman antiquities, physics, logic, and ethics, and later the Greek language was introduced.
Today, this building houses the Philological Gymnasium, which continues to nurture the values of classical languages, literature, and history. The gymnasium now has three streams: classical languages, modern languages, and a specialised stream for history and geography.
Classes Were Taught in LatinLike in other gymnasiums in the region during the Habsburg Monarchy, classes were conducted in Latin. Exams were also taken in Latin, so knowledge of it was necessary for students to follow the lessons.
School Newspaper "Branko"The newspaper compiled by students represents an important part of the gymnasium's history. As the students are exceptionally talented in the written word, most published texts include prose and poetry by Karlovci gymnasium students – from the youngest grades to the seniors.
