The Clerical School in Karlovci was founded in 1794 thanks to Metropolitan Stefan Stratimirović. Initially, schooling lasted two, and later three years, and materially disadvantaged pupils had free food. The work of the school was occasionally interrupted due to plague, revolution, and reorganisation.
From 1875, the school grew into a higher theological school – the Seminary, into which pupils who had completed grammar school were admitted. Classes lasted four years, and pupils had church duties alongside their studies. It received new buildings in 1891/92 and 1903. During the First World War, it did not operate, and was briefly restored in 1917/18.
After the war, from 1920 to 1941, the Seminary of Saint Sava operated in Karlovci, right up until the beginning of the Second World War.
After a long break, in 1964 the Seminary in Karlovci was restored as part of the Seminary of Saint Sava from Belgrade, and in 1967 it became an independent school under the name Seminary of Saint Arsenius.
